Have you ever noticed how much music affects our lives? How a song can take you back right to that moment in your life when it was playing? How a song can make us think of the most wonderful people in our lives. How a song can make us think of the saddest times in our lives. How a song can make us smile. How a song can make us cry. How a song can make us jump up and dance like nobody is watching. How a song can make us feel. How a song can start playing and you actually listen to the words ? really listen to them and think “wow I really needed to hear that right now “.
Well that happened to me yesterday when I was driving to my chiropractor appointment. I was feeling a bit apprehensive about going, since I just started treatment last week and I am beyond nervous about being “cracked”. The radio DJ stopped talking and on the radio came “Eye of the tiger”. I actually stopped paying attention to the road for a split second, and thought “Is this song really playing right now?”. So I turned the radio up and I sang along at the top of my lungs……. How did the universe know, that at that moment, that was just what I needed?
We were very blessed as kids growing up in our home. My parents listened to many genres of music, exposing my sisters and I to them all. Our parents listened to Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Rush, Rolling stones, Led Zepplin, John Lennon, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Kiss, Roy Orbison, Kris Kristofferson. The list was endless, and quite vast but what a wonderful journey of hearing so many different types of music. To this day, my sisters and I are blessed to love many types of music thanks to our parents!
When I hear “Ave Maria” I think of my Nonna. When I hear Faith Hill I think of my wedding day. When I hear “La Bamba” I think of my sisters wedding dance. When I hear “Shout” I think of my Aunt and Uncle who will dance to anything that has a beat ! When I hear Meatloafs “I would do anything “ I think of my dear friend who passed away in high school. When I hear "I wish i was a teddy bear" I think of my talented Uncle. When I hear Johnny Horton “North to Alaska” I think of our wonderful family trips cottaging. When I hear Johnny Cash "Burning ring of fire" I think of my Dad. When I hear our National Anthem I get goose bumps. When I hear “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror picture show, I think of my high school friends.
One of my all time favorite memories of being a kid, is sitting on the couch after dinner with my family listening to John Lennon’s album. Quiet family time. True bonding. Music can be so soothing to our minds, hearts and souls.
What song was playing during some of the best, worst , happiest or saddest times of your life?
Eye of the Tiger
Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
Chorus:
It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger
Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds 'til we take to the street
For we kill with the skill to survive
chorus
Risin' up, straight to the top
Have the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive
chorus
