I thought today I would write about the wonderful women in my life. They have been a wonderful influence in my life and who have helped to make me the person I am today.
It would only be fitting to start off my talking about the woman who brought me into this world, my Mom. She is one of the most amazing women I know. She brought my sisters and I to church every Sunday and taught us to have strong values and morals. She taught us to see the good in everyone. If the devil walked into the room, my Mom would say “come on Jen, there has to be some good in him somewhere”. Yes my Mom would even give the devil the benefit of the doubt. There were always homemade cookies on the table growing up and there was always a home cooked meal on the table at dinner time. Even if it was a one pot meal cooked in that black roasting pan I hated! (an inside family joke and guess what ? I now own one of those roasting pans). I always knew after volleyball or basketball practice when I came out to the parking lot, my mom would be there sitting in her car waiting patiently for me.
She is the kind of mom who would throw out a bar of soap to us on a rainy day while we were outside playing and say “hey take a shower while you are out there!” She is the kind of mother who showed us her love with hugs, kisses and “I love you’s”. She is the kind of mother who rarely said to no to any of us daughters. She is the kind of mother who would go without, to make sure we had what we needed. She is the kind of mother who did homework with us. She is the kind of mother who loves unconditionally. She is the kind of mother, that I hope to be just like one day. She is someone I am very proud to call my MOM and someone I love with all of my heart.
My Grandmothers are 2 other women who I love with all of my heart and soul. My Nanny is an amazing woman, and one of the hardest working women I know. She raised 5 children during tough times, and somehow made it through. She worked on a farm when she came to Ontario and worked harder than most of us ever have on our toughest day. She is one of those women who can do anything and do it exceptionally well. A true self learner. She can cook, bake, knit, and tell stories like no other! Her house is immaculate. In her late 70’s she started to play the guitar and is giving my Uncles a run for their money. What a true inspiration! My Nanny loves with all of her heart.

My Nonna was a phenomenal woman! She taught me so much …how to make bread, how to crochet, how to make sauce and how to take care of others. She came to this country from Italy, not speaking the language with 4 children and then had 2 more boys while living in Canada. She worked full time as well as took care of her husband and family. At one time she told me she worked in a factory cleaning chickens. The factory was a one hour walk from her home, and she walked to and from there every day. My Nonna lived for her children. We lost her 5 years ago and I miss her every single day.
15 years ago I was blessed when I met my mother in law for the first time. Some people suffer with terrible inlaws, but that is not the case for me. Mine are wonderful. My mother in law is a strong, hard working, wonderful, loving woman. My mother in law came to Canada from Greece, didn’t speak english and had 2 wonderful children. She is an extremely hard working woman who keeps an exception home, a watchful eye over my father in law, can sew entire outfits, a kitchen full of delicious foods and loves her family more than anything else in the world.
When I met my mother in law, I also got to meet my sister in law. Truthfully the one thought that comes to my mind, and makes me smile, is that she is the best shopper! She loves to buy something new and try it out. She loves to hang out with her family and chat. She loves satellite tv, she loves to make a good espresso, she loves to have family around, and she loves her kids more than life. I am honoured to call her my sister.
There are 3 young women in my life who I am very proud to call my sisters. My parents divorced when I was 3, and so my sisters are all 6-10 years younger than I am. Growing up sometimes I felt more like a mom to them than I did a sister. But now that we are all in our 20’s and 30’s we have become friends. I cherish our friendship and I love to spend time with them. They have grown up into wonderful, smart, beautiful, savvy, happy women. Often I talk to them, and find that I am learning from them. I find them offering me advice and I think to myself “wow they aren’t little girls anymore”. I love them all very much!
The women in my life are a true blessing. I am thankful for them every day. For the little gifts that we all share……..love, faith, hope and friendship.
Why Women Cry
Author Unknown
A little boy asked his mother, "Why are you crying?" "Because I'm a woman," she told him. "I don't understand," he said. His Mom just hugged him and said, "And you never will." Later the little boy asked his father, "Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?" "All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry. Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone, he asked, "God, why do women cry so easily?"
God said, "When I made the woman she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.
I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining. I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly.
I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart. I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly. And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. This is hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed."
"You see my son," said God, "the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart - the place where love resides."
