Sausage Day !

Well i promised you some pics from my weekend of sausage making and here they are! My crazy Italian family still makes sausage and suprasatta from scratch each January and I had the pleasure of hanging out with my Dad and Uncles this past weekend while we carried on our family tradition.

The process is alittle long but we delegated some of the hard work to the butcher this year. We each order a pork butt for ourselves, the butcher cleaned the meat for us this year, and then ground it up. Then one of my Uncles picked it up and they brought it home, where we put it in big plastic containers and it was spiced up with our family secret recipe ! ( you didn't think i was going to tell you it , did you? ha ha ) The meat sat over night and Saturday morning we all showed up ready to get to work. To be honest, i showed up with my apron but my uncles and Dad seemed to have it under control so i took my job of photographer seriously and then helped with preparing lunch with my Uncle Tony.

Marinated meat.
Casings and strings to tie them up.
Men hard at work !

After we were all finished and tidied up, we sat down to a feast. Oven roasted freshly made sausage, an asparagus frittata, zucchini patelles and fried potatoes with peppers and onions. Yes a feast fit for royalty. Oh and lets not forget the wine on the table. Lunch was amazing but more amazing was the circle of family that surrounded the table. I am so blessed to have the most amazing Uncles who have always included me in their shenanigans. Being the oldest granddaughter and having had lived with my Nonna, i sometimes fall into more of a sister category than a niece...........I am good with that and proud of my place in my family. I have blogged about my family on both sides many times, they are my life.

The finished beauties !

Does your family make any homemade foods? sausage? canning? pickles? There is nothing better than homemade anything, its fresh, you know the ingredients and it was made with TLC - tender loving care!
