Just Ducky !

Early one morning last week my husband was wandering around in our yard before he left for work and found 2 ducks wandering around as well. So I ran out and gave him 2pieces of bread and he fed them breakfast.

This past week, I got up early to see my husband off to work and guess who was standing outside waiting for breakfast? Yes our ducks. So once again I ran inside and got them some bread and fed them. Do you know the next morning I saw them outside my bedroom window waddling down the driveway towards the side of the garage again? So off I ran to get them some bread and fed them breakfast again.

Yesterday they didn’t come to the garage door so I went out to hunt them down. I found them in the backyard where our property line ends, and there is a low area where the rain water has gathered. They were hanging out and when I approached they ran towards me. What a greeting!

Last night I heard a funny noise outside the deck and I went to investigate and there were my ducks. The male had fallen in or walked into my neighbours window well and was flapping his wings to get out. The female bird was standing next to him and I could just imagine what she was saying: “I told you not to go in there, you were going to get stuck! You never listen to me.”

So I got 2 English muffins and went back outside to feed them dinner. They ran to the garage door where I had previously fed them! Smart birds except that I was sitting on the back deck, so I crinkled the bread bag and they came around the corner to me. I started to feed them and the funniest thing happened…………the male bird turned sharply and put his head down and motored it towards my basement window. I think he caught sight of his reflection and thought it was another duck. When he got to the window he rammed his beak into the glass over and over again. Once again I could just imagine his wife saying “ ummm what the hell are you doing?”. Ha ha ! He did this about six times and you’d think after the first couple he would have stopped, but nope he kept at it. I would like to think he was protecting his turf or his wife’s honor but I am not really sure.

After about five minutes, the wife duck actually layed down on my gravel driveway and I could almost hear her huffing “ you know he does this all the time? Its so exhausting."

Sharing these moments with these beautiful birds is such a blessing. The male’s green/blue head is amazing and the way he follows his wife around is sweet. When she is done eating and starts to head back to the their mini river at the end of our lot, he dutifully follows her. They are lovely creatures and I hope they stick around so I can keep admiring them and feeding them.

Quack! Quack !
