Two weekends ago my husband and I had the pleasure of spending time at our neighbours cottage in the great white north! well not quite that far north but we were in a small town called Dunchurch just past Perry Sound. And i decided today that i want to go back! I wish today i was sitting on that wonderful deck overlooking the lake and feeding the chipmunks peanuts.
There is something amazingly relaxing about being north. Nothing beats the view of the lake, the sounds of the birds, the speed of the chipmunk running with his fortune in nuts, using the outhouse, the fire crackling, how good a cold beer goes down, floating in the lake with a pool noodle, the sound of the boat motor, the sound of laughter when someone falls off the tube, swatting at the deerflies, the taste of a hungry mans breakfast..........wonderful.
When i got to the cottage and realized that there was a hammock i was so happy. I havent layed in a hammock since my Nonnu used to have one, and that would put my last rocking in one, about 15 years ago. Far too long ago. My neighbour was kind enough to share the valuable tips on how to get into the hammock, which by the way was situated between 2 gorgeous trees on a hill. Let me start by saying who puts a hammock on a hill? Do you see where this story is going? ha ha ha! My first attempt went well. I walked far back into the hammock with it resting on my butt, and then slowly sat in it, and then gradually brought it back to being level with the ground and swung my legs into it. Easy Breezy! Success ! I stayed in the hammock for quite some time and it was everything i remembered. Relaxing. Fun. Amazing. Restful.
My second attempt wasnt so graceful or successful. I dont think i walked back far enough with my butt into the hammock and as i went to swing my legs into it, i lost my balance and fell over the entire thing, and slid down the hill a few feet! I quickly looked around and realized that there was nobody watching me, I started to laugh. I got on all fours and crawled up the hill, got back onto my feet and then felt some burning on my elbow, great road rash from my fall. So guess what i did ? I tried to get back into the hammock a second time. I could hear someone in my head saying , if you fall off the horse you gotta get back on it.........so round two was almost as unsuccessful as the previous attempt, but this time i only fell a foot, rather than down the hill, but much to my surprise my friend had come out and witnessed the entire falling off the hammock, and this time not only did i laugh but i heard her laughing too! Ok I am glad to say my third attempt was a perfect ten! i walked back, got in, leveled out and swung my legs up like a olympic gymnast! success! My friend suggested I go inside and get my book to read while i was laying there, was she kidding? There was no way i was attempting getting into the hammock a fourth time, so i swung there silently, watching the lake and listening to the wonderful sounds of the outdoors.

I think my other favorite part was the fire we had one night after dinner. I love to hear the crackle of the fire and feel the heat. I can't sit near a fire without having a roasted marshmellow, so i ran inside like a kid and got the bag that i brought and roasted my self a few of them. Nobody else was in the mood for them(boring adults ha ha ). I will be honest i ate more than a few, i licked the metal skewer clean and I had marshmellow on my face and in the left side of my hair! it was great! and all i hope it would be.
There was nothing that let me down that weekend. I enojoyed every minute of the days, and every evening with our friends.
We have a weekend planned away before the summer is up to do some tent camping and I am looking forward to the campfires, the dinners cooked over them and the swimming in the lake. However I am abit nervous about the lack of bathrooms or the fact that the public ones are a few minutes walk away. I am hoping that it all works out! I will let you know how that trip goes. All that keeps running through my mind is "tent? what am i thinking?" ha ha ha ! Wish me luck!
