Tonight i tried a new yoga class. I am sitting here asking myself why? Well because i am totally into it, having a hot relationship with it, and so i wanted to try a different instructor and a different class. I have no intention of leaving my current class, i love it, but i thought adding in some other classes would be fun. Tonights class focused on restorative poses and breathing. We were handed 3 blankets, a bolster, 2 blocks and a strap to use tonight. More props than i have used.
The class started with sitting on a block and some breating exercises. So far so good. The next pose was stretching a strap over my head and down my back, not too bad. Then it started.........the folding of the blankets, the the rolling up of the blankets, then unfolding the blankets, then picking the fuzz off my yoga pants from the blankets, then striking a pose and figuring out how to jam the rolled up blankets to the right place on my body. We spent more time rolling up blankets and refolding blankets than we did posing. To be honest i all kept thinking was how gross it was touching all these props during flu season. I was having a minor germaphobe attack!
The last pose of the evening was on my back, with a bolster under my back, a folded blanket under my head ( yes the dreaded 4 way fold ) and 2 rolled up blankets under each of my knees and a strap around my waist attached to my feet...........oh ya we used all the props in one friggin pose ! i think i should get a pat on the back for that! ha ha! I was told this pose is fantastic for pms, great ! i dont have pms but i will have to remember it for when i do ! need a post it note for that! finally we released our legs and our wonderful, calming, savasana was done with a friggin bolster under my back ! how uncomfortable!
The only plus out of this entire night, was the breathing. The yoga breathing is gold and although i was not enjoying the class so much, i took each pose seriously and breathed through them all. Breathing is so important for us, and none of us do it right. Did you know that? we don't use our entire lungs? and we should more often.
I am so glad this was not my first yoga class, because i would never, ever come back! just touching all of the props alone had my skin crawling. I am now home sitting on my couch with a sore back because i don't think laying on a bolster for 10 minutes is good for me. I just don't. oh and one last complaint, the instructor was using the worst, phony, calming, weird voice i have ever heard. It was getting on my last nerve.
I have written in my blogs about my amazing yoga instructor before, and i will say it again..........she rocks! Her voice is not annoying. Her teaching approach is kind. Her reminding us to do what our bodies tell us, and never forces us into odd poses that hurt us. She plays beautiful music and she encourages us in a positive way. That is what an instructor should do....................so if you take a yoga class and you leave feeling frustrated, or angry or even sad............that is NOT how you should feel. Don't give up on yoga, find a different instructor, a different kind of yoga or a different studio. Its well worth it and well amazing for the mind, body and soul.
